Health is truly THE GREATEST BLESSING, as anyone who has experienced health challenges will attest to. Health encompasses mental, physical and social well-being. We all want to age healthfully and be able to feel good in our minds and bodies, and have the physical ability to do the things we love in retirement. The average life expectancy in the United States is approximately 78 years old, so aging healthfully post retirement should give us many years to enjoy travel, hobbies and loved ones that we often didn’t have time for during our working years.
Aging Healthfully
Enjoying good health as we age is often not a matter of luck, but depends on our lifestyle choices. Good health encompasses many things, and our lifestyle choices play a large role in our health status. Lifestyle choices are things we can control with our health, making them a nice area to focus on (because some things like genetics or accidents are out of our control). Lifestyle choices include what we eat, how active we are, our sleep routines, how we manage stress, and getting proactive/preventative medical care.
Health Benefits of Daily Exercise
I have always been a believer that daily physical exercise is one of the most important things we can do to age healthfully. In college I ran and did aerobics several times/week. As a young adult, I ran, hiked and did many group exercise classes including Body Pump and Bootcamp. As a midde aged adult, I continued Body Pump, Bootcamp and added in weekly Yoga/Pilates workouts. While I still enjoy running, my knee doesn’t and I more often walk or hike.
Mental Health Benefits of Regular Exercise
In addition to the physical benefits to health of exercising, I also experience the mental benefits. I truly don’t feel as happy when I don’t exercise regularly. During the Covid shutdown, I was thrown for a loop as to how to workout at home. I missed my group exercise classes for both the physical and social benefits. Fit N Fun Games was born out of this missing social exercise classes. While it started out as a way for our families to workout together, it has blossomed into a dream of inspiring others to have fun getting fit.
Regular exercise is as important to me as brushing my teeth, taking supplements and even showering daily. I simply don’t feel as good if I fall out of the habit of daily exercise. My hope is that this game will inspire others to enjoy working out so that it becomes a habit and way of life. After you get into a regular exercise routine it becomes a habit that continues, because you feel and see the health benefits. Health truly is one of life’s greatest blessings, and I pray often for continued good health for myself and my loved ones.
