The first few months of Covid during the lockdown were scary and unprecedented times. Honestly, I found myself bored often and missed seeing people and going places. My two sons were distance learning for school and my husband and I were both off work. It was a lot of time together, without a lot to do.
At Home Workouts
During this period, we decided to see one family, our good friends and my workout buddy. Sherry and I made some bootcamp games and worked out most days with our kids for their gym credits. However, we soon grew tired of the same workouts, and decided to create our own. This is what led to our Fit N Fun Games Bootcamp Edition.
Steps To Creating Our Board Game
We came up with the idea, and decided to draw it our on paper. Our original name was “Get Fit Fast – At Home Workout Challenge”. We worked out/played it and really liked the workout, but weren’t happy with the ending.
Our second edition we changed the ending to a more intense, pyramid-style finish. These exercises were all performed for one minute, and when we invited some fellow bootcamp buddies to play, they didn’t like our ending. In fact, it made them mad that they couldn’t possibly catch someone at the end, no matter how hard they worked at it (because the exercises were all timed).
This led to another revision at the end, with even more challenging exercises, plus two opportunities for someone to have to move back on the gameboard. We added a “Take A Hike” section and also a “Speed Bump”, which depending on the roll of the dice would require you to move back spaces. The exercises are also not timed, so potentially, someone could really work hard (and fast) and catch or surpass someone on the ending ladder.
Developing Fit-N-Fun Games Bootcamp Edition
It was fun to workout with different groups of people and introduce them to our fitness game. Honestly, we thought it would just be for our own use at home; however, the feedback we got was that it was a challenging and fun game. Hence the name “Fit N Fun Games”.
Creating and tweaking this board game gave us a sense of purpose and fulfillment during an uncertain time. We also enjoyed the social aspect of working out with others again. What began as a family workout during Covid has turned into a way for us to express our creativity and inspired us to step out of our comfort zone with bringing this fitness game to market.
It is a labor of love, and we have enjoyed every step of the process. Connecting with others and learning along the way has been rewarding (and challenging). Some of the steps have been getting a video shoot to demonstrate the exercises, developing a website and hiring a graphic artist to design our game. Our next step is getting it produced (which proves challenging, especially with some of the Covid-related shortages and issues with shipping). We hope to have a finished product for sale soon, so that more people can have fun getting fit with their friends and families from home!
