Fueling your workouts can be a big help in increasing your endurance and stamina when working out.
High Carb Pre-Workout
It used to be believed that eating a high carb breakfast prior to working out was the best way to give you energy. That is why they used to have a spaghetti dinner the night before a marathon, and then recommended a high carb breakfast the morning of the race. There are studies showing that eating high carb before any endurance workout may allow you to workout longer. There is also conflicting information revealing high carb meals make you burn out quicker. Carbohydrates are absorbed by the body quickly, providing a burst of energy, but that energy runs out quickly leaving your tank dry.
High Protein Pre-Workout
Eating a breakfast of protein and healthy fats has also been shown to increase workout intensity and endurance. I used to eat a hard boiled egg and half an avocado before heading to the gym. There is a lot of conflicting information about whether it’s best to eat protein before or after a workout. Some experts believe consuming protein post workout can help you build muscle. Again, lots of conflicting information on what is best.
Fasting Pre-Workout
Recently, I have read a lot about intermittent fasting, and not breaking your fast until after you workout. This made we wonder if I would have less energy during my workout? I decided to give it a try, and have found that I feel better during my workouts if I wait to eat post-workout. In fact, intermittent fasting has made me feel less hungry with less cravings and increased my energy throughout the day.
My Intermittent Fasting Routine
Intermittent fasting is something I try to do 4-5 days/week, with an 8 hour feasting period and 16 hour fasting period. I typically workout in the morning, and then break my fast late morning, just before lunch time. Then I eat what want (without counting calories, etc.) through dinner, and try to not eat/drink (other than water) after dinner.
While it seems counterintuitive that I would have more energy eating less, and basically not eating before I workout, I have found the opposite to be true. I actually have more energy and stamina working out prior to eating during the day.
My Favorite Workout

Fit N Fun Bootcamp Boardgame
What’s my favorite workout, you might ask? Well, the Fit N Fun Bootcamp Boardgame I dreamt up during Covid, of course! I have experimented with eating prior to this workout and fasting prior, and found I perform better overll and in challenges when fasting.
If you haven’t tried fasting before workouts, and/or haven’t tried my fun fitness game — I highly recommend you give both a try!
