When most people think of physical education (PE), they picture a gymnasium filled with basketball hoops, bleachers, and polished floors. But what if we reimagined PE beyond the walls of a gym? The truth is, physical education doesn’t need a gym to be effective, engaging, or transformative.
1. Nature Is the Ultimate Playground

Outside Group Workout with Fit-N-Fun
Outdoor spaces offer endless opportunities for movement and exploration. Parks, fields, trails, and even schoolyards can become dynamic classrooms. Activities like hiking, yoga in the grass, frisbee, or nature scavenger hunts promote physical fitness while connecting students to the environment. Outdoor fitness games like our Fit-N-Fun Bootcamp Board Game have also grown in popularity.
2. Movement Is Everywhere
PE is about movement, not location. Dance routines in the cafeteria, stretching in the hallway, or circuit training in a classroom can be just as impactful as traditional gym workouts. These flexible setups encourage creativity and adaptability—skills that benefit students beyond PE. With budget cuts, many schools are needing to find alternative spaces for PE classes. Our Fit-N-Fun boardgame can be played anywhere from the gym, to outdoors to even a hallway. I know of a 6th grade teacher who sets it up in the hallway outside her class. She uses it as a “brain break” when students rotate throughout literature stations. The movement at the brain break stations makes the other stations more successful.
3. Equity and Accessibility
Not every school has access to a gym, and that shouldn’t be a barrier to quality physical education. By embracing alternative spaces and low-cost equipment, educators can ensure all students have access to meaningful movement experiences, regardless of resources. One perk of our boardgame is that it is a one-time low cost ($39.99) and not something that needs to be purchased or updated annually. There is optional equipment of handweights, but most of our schools opt not to utilize handweights.
4. Community Engagement
Taking PE outside the gym can foster community connections. Local parks, recreation centers, and walking trails can become part of the curriculum. This not only enriches the learning experience but also helps students see physical activity as a lifelong, community-based habit.
5. Mental Health Benefits
Outdoor and non-traditional PE settings often reduce stress and increase engagement. Natural light, fresh air, and varied environments can boost mood and motivation, making students more likely to participate and enjoy physical activity. Our gamified fitness also boosts participation and engagement from students, because we “make fitness fun.”
